![]() ![]() Several other students from across the Coastal Bend competed in the state science fair. “I want to be an engineer,” Udoh said, explaining that he’s interested in renewable fuel sources and finding alternatives to petroleum. Though Udoh won’t move on to nationals, he was awarded a $2,000 check for his efforts from the Port of Corpus Christi. Seventh grader Michael Udoh competed at state as well, presenting his data on whether vegetable oil or motor oil was better at producing heat when burned. “Most people had an overall vote of the saddest instrument being the piano and the happiest as being a guitar,” Spencer said. Spencer played instrumental music for listeners and had them complete a survey to describe what emotions various instruments made them feel. The students will have to submit information online before the field is limited to 300 and then 30 students across the country. Preparing for the national science fair is a rigorous process. “But I was glad that the hard-shell helmet did protect because that’s what people are wearing in the NFL and in tackle leagues.” ![]() “I thought it was really surprising that they did so poorly,” Lamb said. ![]() Testing two soft-shell helmets, Lamb found that eggs cracked in both an impact foam helmet and a polyester and foam helmet, but were protected in a hard-shell helmet. “I thought, with this experiment, I could help family members, my friends and myself as well.” ![]() "I felt responsibility to do this project because of that,” Lamb said. While helmets can protect children from most serious types of brain injuries, they aren’t designed to prevent concussions. Centers for Disease Control, football has the highest number of sports-related concussions and other traumatic brain injuries among youth. ![]()
